No, it's a matter of the drivers not working well with them. ATI actually had to released a dedicated set for them.

Bingo. Even the new 9.1 aren't playing nice from what I hear, and Sapphire had to modify them because the normal ATi drivers have no support for the 4850X2 at all.

Acually AMD released an official driver package just for the 4850x2...

he insistes he cant make it any more multi threded then he has, probbly to much work to try and finegrain it :P

The TASK itself doesn't seem to "lend itself" to doing multiple threads, ALBEIT, in a "fine-grained" multithreaded design is all!

(As it uses multiple threads already is why (i.e.-> Where multiple threads work on the EXACT same data, whereas in 'coarse multithreading', the kind I use, it works on diff. areas & data))

... & THIS? This happens!

Ash... not 'everything' really gains via thread usage is all.

Especially since I work on the ENTIRE dataset, @ once...

(Doing string comparisons, linearly, down thru each entry, vs. ALL the others in the HOSTS file!)

and apk, i would take the 4850x2 at 300bucks over a gtx280 at 400........

I like NVidia stuff, big fan of OpenGL & traditionally? They outdo ATI on OpenGL performance... that's for starters!

(AND, I do wish to "get into" CUDA coding too!)

LASTLY?

My app already has multiple thread design... coarse grained type!

I think you'll be happy with your purchase, APK.

As long as it takes me down from the CURRENT runtime of 1.75-2.75 hrs. when I do a run of THIS program, in its CURRENT build:

From its runtme here of 1.75-2.75 hours (depending on CPU priority I use & of course, HOSTS file size), down to levels like YOUR system had of ONLY 1 hr., when you tested it for me there (thanks again, was a BIG influence in my purchase in your massively fast results by the by)...

?

HEY, trust me:

I will be happy...

I've noted that from the CPU charts over @ Tom's Hardware, that the INTEL I7 Core 920 CPU I have generally outperforms even YOURS by roughly an avg. of 16-35% on MOST tests he has there (give or take a few %-age points, on some tests etc. et al)

After all - I am mostly looking for what INTEL claims the I7 Core CPU family yields, mostly - increases in REAL WORLD WORK TASKS SCENARIOS (more than just gaming)...

----

It may even tempt you to rewrite your grinder for multi-threading. :D wink, wink, nudge, nudge. lol.

?

Again, as I stated to Ash above here earlier?

The program uses multiple threads, already... albeit, not in what is called "fine grained multithreaded design" but, instead, "coarse multithreading"... &, there is a difference. The 1st kind IS tougher, & NOT every task lends itself to that either.
